About Our Class...
I am so excited to begin a new school year with you! Third grade is technically the beginning of what we call the "intermediate grades". Students will begin to transition from the "primary" grades (K-2) to the Intermediate grades (3-5). This is a turning point in your child's elementary school years. We will go from learning TO read to... reading FOR information. This is also when multiplication fact fluency begins!
Students will also be encouraged to become more independent with their learning. They will begin keeping track of their homework and assignments in their assignment notebooks.
In reading/language arts class, students will be engaging in a management model called Daily 5. You can read more about this system here.
In math, we will begin the year reviewing and elaborating more on place value. Our math class consists of
small group instruction with math workshop built in.
Homework in our class should not exceed 1 hour. I understand how busy the evenings can be, but I do expect students to complete their homework on a nightly basis. My homework philosophy is to assign meaningful practice work to build on what is being learned in class. I do not assign homework on Fridays. Daily homework includes:
-Reading minutes (60 minutes/week)
-Math fact practice on www.xtramath.org (students will be assigned a user name and password under my
name)
-Compass practice (60 minutes/week)
-Math or writing practice (will be sent home in take-home folder)
