Daily 5 Literacy Block
Daily 5 is a management system that we engage in during our 90-minute literacy block. Students work on authentic reading activities while I work with students in small group lessons or meet with individual students.
Each morning, students make their Daily 5 choices that they would like to engage in for the afternoon.
Daily 5 choices include:

Read to Self
During Read-to-Self, students self select their "just right" books out of their book box and read silently. Students also use their "Word Collector" to record interesting words they've found during reading.
Read With Someone
Read With Someone
During
Read with Someone, students practice their fluency by reading to someone.
Students hold their bright pink "Coaching" bookmarks, as well as their red
"Check for Understanding" checkmarks to check for their partner's understanding
of what has been read.
Work on Writing
Work on Writing
Students
use their portable word wall in their writing folder to write narratives based
on their choice. They can also use story starters in the writing center or use
monthly word prompts from the word prompt ring.
Work with Words
Work with Words
When students work
with words, they use their DSA word list to complete activities based on the day
of the week. After they are finished with the daily DSA activities, they may
stamp their words, write, trace & erase on gel boards, or use word bricks to
practice spelling their words. They also practice their high-frequency words
during this time.
Listen to Reading
Listen to Reading
Students use hand-held CD players to listen to fluent reading. We can always use hand-held CD player donations (as we currently have 3 to work with)!!
